Threaded BB Installation Part 1: How Not To Screw It Up Whilst Screwing It In
Threaded external cup style bottom brackets are a snap to install if you use proper tools and techniques. In this video we show you what you should apply to the threads for installation and we go over the basics of proper tool selection when screwing in a bottom bracket. We are going to install a threaded English bottom bracket. The basic installation technique is going to be similar for an Italian bottom bracket, except for this part I'm going to say right now and that is about the directionality. What we have is we have a left-hand thread and a right-hand thread when we come to English bottom brackets. Now there is an actual reason for that. That's kind of a mind bender and if you guys really want to know someday, I'll do a video on why they made one side left hand thread. What their rationale was now, the biggest question we get is when installing this is, "is it okay to use grease on the threads" or this or that let's talk about that. Here's what we want you to use. You can use Teflon tape no problem whatsoever. Big with people in Florida. And we can even use some Otis, which is basically like a liquid version of that. And then you can use anti-seize compound. A lot of you guys that have titanium frames, you're gonna love that and then of course you have regular grease you can use any number of greases. We just happen to love the motor x around here. Now this is a very simple procedure. Doesn't take a lot of stress and strain, but the beautiful thing I want to show you guys right now is "how do I know which way to screw it in". Especially if you have a brand-new frame it happens, and you didn't take the old ones out. If you took the old ones out just make note of which way they turned when they were coming out now the way to know it which way to turn them is to visualize the bike that you are actually spinning them in the direction of the rear wheel so you're turning them in the direction of the rear wheel to rear wheel to tighten and you're turning them in the direction of the front wheel in order to loosen them that's pretty clear so we're going to be tightening it toward the rear wheel and we're going to be loosening it toward the front wheel that's going to go for that's going to be true for both sides so that's all you have to remember now let's talk about the tools real quick here this is the kind of tool we would like to see you use now this is a park tool what is that a bbt 69.2 this is your regular Shimano fc33 these are socket types this is what we absolutely want to see you use here are two that you have seen before these are like these Shimano wrenches this one actually used to come with the bottom brackets we do not want you to use these okay we don't we do not want you to use these and the reason for that is these don't have a lot of contact area and they do tend to want to slip and uh and tear the bottom bracket up and they rip this anodized up and it really just looks like crap and it's not pro and you know how it is you're not fast unless you look pro and a torn up anodizing your bottom bracket is anything but pro so this has really excellent engagement gets right in there and it interdigitates with the 16 notches no problem won't slip doesn't cause any marring and that's how we want to proceed so we're going to install this in the next video let's go
