If you have a Shimano 11spd shifter this will eventually happen to you. Because Shimano wanted to keep the form factor of their shifters sleek, they had to work within tight constraints that forced them to wrap the inner wire over the indexing barrel in a tight radius. Over time fatigue sets in near the die end that anchors the cable to the indexing barrel and the wire strands snap, leaving the shifter dead in the water. The fix is easy once you know how, as we show you here.
This is something that's extremely common with Shimano 11 speed shifters and if you have them you will eventually have this happen to you so it's a good idea to know how to fix it so come on in here and check this out this is the first clue that we got a problem right here this is used to have this used to have a die end on it right here right and the die in goes inside the shifter right there and it's what the barrel grabs onto as it's adjusting as it's indexing click click click click click click click- it pulls cable so as you can look at in here take a look real quick that's a sign of a problem so we're going to pull this cover off kind of a pain there we go and then you guys can look inside of here and see that we've got quite a rat's nest going okay so we need to clear all this stuff out of here because this is going to prevent the barrel from advancing or retreating because it's just binding everything up so you can't get a new cable in it you can't even get this one out so you have to pull this little cover off the bottom in order to get at this stuff there is that little sucker right there that's what it looks like now we need to feed the new cable back in so I want you to come in here and take a look at this real quick so we've got it through the uh we've got it pulled through the shifter where it's supposed to be and a lot of guys are going to want to start feeding this cable in like this and then get a big loop going like that and then and then at the end what you're going to have is you're going to have this real tight bend trying to finish off to go into there and what's going to happen is when you start putting a tight bend in one of these cables in order to make that curve trust me I've tried when these shifters first came out and you're gonna end up putting - you're gonna end up putting a bend in it okay and the minute you put a bend a kink in the cable it's done it is dead in the water don't even bother I mean you can you can kind of straighten them out sometimes a little bit but what happens is it creates kind of like a spring in the middle of the cable so now you've got a variable in there that's not supposed to be there right and the shifting is going to be wacky so what to do what to do well here's what to do you want to get the kink at the front end so go ahead and feed it in this cable needs to be pulled back like this and you want to make that tight bend see this tight bend that's happening right here you want to make that tight bend right away and the reason for that is you're going to end up cutting like that much off the end so if the bend is at the end it's a sacrificial piece anyway so who cares and so you want to get that if you're going to put a kink in it you want to put the kink in on the front side
