When one-size-fits-all plastic, or alloy housings are pressed into undersized frame shells, the lack of precision means radial compression of the outer races, which squeezes the ball bearings onto the inner races, causing tight bearings that will never run smoothly. When your bike was built, or that new crank was installed, your bearings were misaligned by a mechanic who followed the instructions to the letter. Pre-load forced the inner races inward, twisting the ball bearings out of place, creating chaos in your drive train.
